More Than Just Ceramics: The Story Behind My Vintage Mug Collection

A look into Sema Eker’s unique collection of vintage mugs and teapots. Discover how to display ceramics and bring warmth to your kitchen with a curated collection sourced from around the world.

There is a special kind of magic in wrapping your hands around a warm mug on a rainy day. It grounds you. It turns a simple drink into a moment of peace.

One of the most frequently asked questions on my Instagram (@cozylifebysema) is about my extensive collection of mugs and teapots. To the untrained eye, it might look like simple kitchenware. But for me, each piece is a travel diary, a memory, and a small piece of art.

A Collection Built on Memories, Not Trends

I have spent years curating these pieces. Many of them were sourced during my travels abroad, found in hidden antique shops, or carefully selected from unique artisans. I don’t buy ceramics just to fill a shelf; I buy them because they speak to me.

There is one important rule in my home regarding this collection: They are meant to be used.

These are not museum pieces or delicate “toys” to be kept behind glass. Whether it is a vintage teapot with a chipped spout or a robust handmade mug, they are part of our daily life. I believe that using beautiful objects for your morning coffee or evening tea elevates a mundane routine into a meaningful “ritual.”

How to Style a “Cozy” Kitchen Collection

If you want to start your own collection, here is my advice:

1. Don’t Chase Perfection: Uniformity is boring. I love combining different textures, eras, and colors. A sleek modern cup can look stunning next to a rustic, floral teapot.

2. Open Shelving is Key: Don’t hide your joy in dark cupboards. Open shelves add depth and character to a kitchen, turning your collection into a living part of the decor.

3. Buy What You Love: Forget what is trendy. If a piece makes you smile, it belongs in your home.

In a world that moves too fast, taking the time to choose a special mug for your tea is a small act of rebellion. It is a reminder to slow down and savor the moment.
